The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne BrontëMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Great glimpse into the struggles off a naive young woman who is ill-prepared for marriage. I love the voices Anne Bronte writes in. She's more of a Jane Austen writer than her sisters, but still some darker moments and atmosphere. I believe Anne was honest in her portrayal of the character of men and women of the time and it was VERY refreshing.
Funny how some things never change! The tone regarding alcoholism and depravity is very strong and obvious! I love that. It seems rare that any book is written openly denouncing an addictive lifestyle and also focused so much on that lifestyle. It's painful to read sometimes, but I've been close to people like the husband of Helen and his friends. What a challenging group! Seems better to stay away entirely, to preserve one's family.
